What is a home

Some of the magic involved with constructing dream homes is watching people breathe life into their designs. Seeing that little spark ignites into flames when they throw open the doors of their very own custom home.

But what is a home? Here at ConnerIIIhomebuilders, we talk a lot about the makings of a home, the materials, the time, the effort, the blueprints, the sketches! But what is a home? What makes a home desirable? What is it that turns the bones of a house into something warm and inviting?

Let’s start with the basic definition of what a home is: “A place where one lives permanently…” or “To or at the place where one lives.” Pretty basic stuff, right? A home, by definition, is a place where someone lives. However, simply living in a house doesn’t automatically make it a home; many people have lived in various places and never once referred to it as home. Defining what a home is not often as simple as definition from a book. Though there are plenty of different distinctions and definitions maybe we need to take a look elsewhere

Philosophically, the definition of a home varies. John Berger wrote in his “The meaning of home,” “Originally home meant the center of the world—not in a geographical, but in an ontological sense.” Sandrine Berges has written on a blog of their own that “Homes tend to look different according to what needs they serve, and that varies a great deal according to places and times.” Sandrine Berges has made the distinction that a house is a structure, whereas a home is a lived-in experience.

Socrates and Plato have indirectly defined what a home is in their own ways, with Socrates ' refusal to flee Athens and Plato’s discussion of eternal truths.

Sometimes a home is a memory. For example, when you were a child running around in your parents' yard, tearing up the ground with your shoes, climbing that tall, old tree whose limbs reached for the sky. When the sun finally started to drag its rays down beneath the horizon, you’re mother or father would call you in, and you would rush back to the delicacy of an air-conditioned home and linoleum floors that painted the kitchen. That may feel more like home than other tall, imposing buildings.

What else defines a home? People, items, memories, ideas, perhaps even style? It really is a complex question! But what's truly important is, what does a home mean to you? What do you value? What do you want your home to represent? Working with the right contractors can help bring to life the kind of home you want your house to embody.

At the heart of the matter, a home is very important, just as important as the structure of the house. Our goal here at ConnerIIIhomebuilders is to build a house for you to turn into a home, built upon the bones of durability, sustainability, and accessibility. Maybe we mimic those long-desired kitchen counters from your childhood or turn a back patio into your parents' long-sought-after dream. With grit and love, we hand over a house whose story is just about to be told by the memories, people, and items you will bring into it.

We hope you’ll put your trust in us to bring you a house you can build into a home filled with long-lasting memories, just as crafting is a home all of its own for us.
